American Football

Share
This second wave emo band from the nineties is fantastic. Along the same lines as Mineral, Sunny Day Real estate, and old Appleseed Cast. The simple riffs could be considered post-rock nowadays but the lyrics are straight up emo. This album works well for this time of year and for wanting a little nostalgia.

Ray LaMontagne

Share
Gossip In The Grain is Mr. LaMontagne's new album. It starts really strong with his first single but then the album slows down for a while. By the last half of the album he really gets going. I recommend "Henry Nearly Killed Me"

The Great Book of John

Yves' Blues is the long awaited album from Birmingham folk band The Great Book of John. Every song was recorded in one take which lets you know this band is for real.

Margot & The Nuclear So and So's

Share
This is Margot's newest album. But there are two versions entitled Animal and Not Animal. The first album Animal is the version that Margot wants to release, while Not Animal is what Epic Records wants them to release. Apparently there was some problems with the label because this album has been delayed for some time now. However, Margot is a new folk/chamber pop style. They were selected by Spin magazine for artists to watch in 2008.  This album is a lot like The Decemberists or Arcade Fire.

Bon Iver

Share
If you have not heard of this band download them immediately. This could be my favorite album of 2008. Thats all I'm going to say.

Band of Annuals

Share
This band is a sort of folky alternative country band. I think thats a good way to describe them but I'm not very good at this. If more country music was like this I would enjoy it. The pedal steel guitar has such a melodic ring to it. I think that could be a big reason why I like this band.

Noah and The Whale

Share
This band is tight.  Their name comes from the movie "The Squid and The Whale'" and that movies director Noah Baumbach. They are super into Wes Anderson just watch this video of them and you can tell. Their music is an indie folk rock style. I highly recommend this album.

Brooke Waggoner

Share
This is Brooke Waggoner's new album "heal for the honey" She is one of the hipster Nashville type people but apparently her music is good. I haven't listened to much yet but It was recommended by Taylor Jones. She was also featured in Paste last month as one of the 25 new artists to know. If anyone reads this blog that I don't know go check out Taylor's photography at Taylorchristianjones.com

TV On The Radio

Share
Here's the new TVOTR cd. I've never been a huge fan of them but this album isn't too bad. There are some good grooves on it. I like the catchy little riff on the second song. Give it a shot.

Electric President

Share
Electric President sounds like Postal Service meets The Books. Its new and I think this genre whatever it is called will continue to grow rapidly.  Metal Fingers has some nice lyrics, I suggest looking them up while you listen to the song. Enjoy

Don Caballero

Share
Punkgasm is the new album from math rocker Don Caballero. Its the first of his cd's to contain vocals so it is an interesting move. You be the judge.

'olafur arnalds

This band is formed around one guy from Iceland. He is only 21 years old but has already opened up for fellow Icelanders Sigur Ros. It is very close to the same style of music. I guess there is something in the water up there that makes everyone enjoy really chill music. Its perfect for a soundtrack, and I would not be surprised if this band has something big coming its way in that department.

Mason Proper

Share
Olly Oxen Free is the third release from Mason Proper. They are an indie rock group from Michigan. Mason Proper rented an old wooden house to record this record. I always like it when bands decide to live together for a period of time to record. I feel that it always produces quality music on their part.

Lotus

Share
Hammerstrike is a new album from Lotus. They are a rock electronica progressive sort of band.  There are some lyrics but for the most part it's nice instrumental music. Behind Midwest Storefronts is probably my favorite track.

Conrad Ford

Share
Secret Army is the new album from Conrad Ford. He is straight out of Seattle with some great folky melodies. I highly suggest this. If you are a fan of the genre than this one will not disappoint.

The Broken West

Share
Now or Heaven is the new album by The Broken West. If you're into indie rock or something close to that you will enjoy this cd.

Chad VanGaalen

Share
"A notorious homebody, Chad VanGaalen is well known for rarely leaving his basement in Calgary, endlessly drawing, recording and making art. Fortunately, he has an uncanny knack for creating music that is sweepingly beautiful and undeniably genuine, and with his third full-length Soft Airplane, this celebrated multi-talented artist has created his most complete album to date.
